Second-Hand Car Seats
Safety first
If you are considering buying a second-hand car seat for your child, there are a few safety precautions you should take first:
- Car seats must meet the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard and have a National Safety mark on them.
- They must come with warnings and guidelines for use, installation instructions and date of manufacture.
- Car seats past the lifespan recommended by the manufacturer should not be purchased.
- The car seat's restraint should be functional and the anchoring systems in good working order.
Never buy a car seat that has been in a vehicle during a collision. If the seller does not know the history of the car seat, do not buy it.
For more information on car seats or to check for recalls contact Transport Canada at 1-800-333-0371 or visit their website www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety.
