Measles & Rubella Weekly Monitoring Report: August 28 to September 3, 2016 (week 35)

Epidemiological Summary

During epidemiological week 35, 2016, two new cases of measles were reported in CanadaFootnote 1. Both cases had rash onset during week 34, and were importations resulting from exposure to measles during travel to Afghanistan.

No new cases of rubella were reported; it has been 29 epidemiological weeks since the last reported case (week 06, 2016).

The year-to-date total is 10 cases of measles and 1 case of rubella for 2016 (Figure 1); almost all cases have been importations with no secondary transmission within Canada.

Geographic Distribution

There are currently two reported activeFigure 2 - Footnote * cases of measles in Canada, located in the region of Eastern Ontario (Figure 2).

There are no reported activeFigure 2 - Footnote * cases of rubella in Canada (Figure not shown).

To date in 2016, measles cases have been reported in four Canadian provinces (British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec), and a rubella case has been reported in one province (British Columbia).

Measles

To date in 2016, 7 measles cases have been genotyped and the genotypes were B3 (n=4) and D8 (n=3) (Figure 3).
