Product description

This recall involves Piggy Paint™ nail polish remover that includes methyl alcohol in the ingredient list. The nail polish remover is sold in a 120 ml (4fl.oz) bottle and can be identified by UPC 850394002131.

The front label has the phrases, "Natural as Mud", "Safe", "Odourless", and "Hypoallergenic", and a picture of a pink pig.

This recall does not include "Piggy Paint" nail polish remover with either the words "alcohol" or "corn alcohol" in the ingredient list.

Hazard identified

A review by Health Canada of this product has found that it contains a high concentration of methyl alcohol, which is toxic by inhalation and ingestion. Symptoms resulting from exposure include headache, dizziness, confusion, shortness of breath, and blurred vision. Methyl alcohol can cause blindness or be fatal if swallowed.

This product is mislabelled as "safe", and lacks the warning symbols and hazard statements required on a container housing methyl alcohol.

Health Canada has not received any reports of incidents or injuries to Canadians related to the use of these products.

Approximately 600 units of this product were known to be sold across Canada.

This product was sold from April 2009 to August 2009.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled product. Consumers may contact Piggy Paint LLC to receive a free replacement bottle of nail polish remover that does not contain methyl alcohol.

Consumers are advised to dispose of the product according to Municipal Hazardous Waste guidelines.
