Product description

This recall involves dishwashers with plastic tubs, sold under the brand names Maytag®, Amana®, Jenn-Air®, Admiral®, Magic Chef®, Performa by Maytag®, and Crosley®. The brand name can be found on the front of the dishwasher.

The front panel on recalled dishwashers may be black, bisque, white, silver, or stainless steel.

Only dishwashers with certain serial numbers are affected by this recall. The serial number is printed on a label on the left side of the door opening.

Hazard identified

An electrical failure in the dishwasher's heating element can pose a serious fire hazard.

Maytag has received 12 reports of dishwasher heating element failures that resulted in fires and dishwasher damage, including one report of extensive kitchen damage from a fire. Maytag is not aware of any injuries.

Neither Health Canada nor the Electrical Safety Authority has received reports of incidents or injuries related to the use of the recalled dishwashers.

Number sold

Approximately 160,000 of the recalled dishwashers were sold at department and appliance stores and by homebuilders across Canada.

Time period sold

The recalled products were sold from February 2006 to April 2010.

What you should do

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled dishwashers, remove the fuse or shut off the circuit breaker for the dishwasher to disconnect it from its electrical supply, and contact Maytag Corporation to verify that their dishwasher is affected by this recall. Consumers are advised to inform all potential users of the dishwasher that there is a risk of fire associated with the use of the recalled dishwashers.

Consumers with affected dishwashers will have the option of scheduling a free in-home repair, or receiving a rebate following the purchase of certain new Maytag-brand stainless-steel tub dishwashers. The rebate is $150 for the purchase of a new model MDB7609 dishwasher or $250 if applied toward the purchase of a new model MDB8959 or MDB7809.

Consumers are asked not to return dishwashers to stores.
