Product description

The recall involves rechargeable batteries which are unmarked or marked with MP or BK sold with Summer Infant Slim and SecureTM Handheld Colour Video Monitors. The video monitor is sold in either silver and white with the model number 02800 and 02804; or pink and white with the model number 02805.

It has receiver and camera components. The receiver is approximately 10.8 centimetres (4 ¼ inches) tall and 6.4 centimetres (2 ½ inches) wide with a 6.4 centimetres (2 ½ inches) LCD screen with the "Summer" logo printed in white on the bottom front. The camera component is silver and white. Both the video monitor and receiver components come with A/C adapters, but only the receiver unit contains a rechargeable battery.

Batteries that are marked TCL are not included in this recall.

Hazard identified

The battery in the handheld video monitor can overheat and rupture, posing a burn hazard to consumers.

Summer Infant has received five reports in the United States of ruptured batteries, including three incidents of minor property damage.

Neither Health Canada nor Summer Infant has received any reports of incidents or injuries in Canada related to the use of the rechargeable batteries.

Number sold

In Canada, approximately 1200 of the recalled products were sold at Babies R Us and other specialty stores.

Time period sold

The affected rechargeable batteries were sold from October 2009 to May 2010.

What you should do

Consumers should immediately stop using the video baby monitors with the recalled batteries and contact Summer Infant to receive a postage-paid envelope to return the defective battery in exchange for a free replacement battery.

The monitor can continue to be used on AC power with the power cord.
