Product description

This recall involves the Cryofreeze SP5560 ice pack/hot pack ("gel pack") that can be heated or frozen to use as a hot or ice pack. The Cryofreeze gel pack was sold as an accessory to insulated lunch boxes. There is no issue with the lunch boxes or any other accessories sold.

The Cryofreeze gel pack is encased in an opaque blue wrapping, with the liquid gel inside. The words "Cryofreeze," "Ice Pack/Hot Pack", "Non-toxic" and "Reusable" are printed on the packaging. The wrapping material is composed of polyethylene and nylon. The size of the gel pack measures 15 centimetres by 14 centimetres

Hazard identified

If the packs become damaged, they can leak gel that may contain the chemicals diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, which can cause illness if ingested in large amounts.

Neither Health Canada nor California Innovations has received any reports of incidents or illnesses to consumers related to the use of these gel packs.

Number sold

Approximately 9,800 of the recalled gel packs were sold in Canada.

Approximately 880,000 recalled gel packs, including additional models not sold in Canada, were distributed in the United States. About Next link will take you to another Web site 248,000 units associated with lunch boxes and Next link will take you to another Web site 55,000 associated with food carriers were previously recalled in the United States in January 2012.

Time period sold

The recalled gel packs were distributed to retailers from October 2006 to September 2008 in Canada.

In the United States, the recalled gel packs were sold by mass merchandisers, warehouse stores, other retailers and on-line sellers between July 2007 and December 2008.

What you should do

Consumers should immediately stop using the gel packs and dispose of them according to federal, provincial, territorial and/or municipal regulations. It is recommended that consumers contact their local waste disposal authority for instructions. Consumers can contact California Innovations for a $5 cash refund of the gel pack.
