Lighting Science Group LED light bulbs
Product description
This recall involves 120-volt LED bulbs that were sold as 8 watt bulbs (equivalent to ~50 watts) and marketed under the following two brand names in Canada:
- Sylvania (sold by Osram Sylvania Inc.)
- Definity (sold by Lighting Science Group)
The affected bulbs have model numbers A19, G25 and R20/PAR20 which can be found on the packaging. The model numbers are also found on the light coloured circular neck above the base of the bulb where the date code is also printed.
The affected bulbs bear manufacturing date codes (imprinted on the base of the bulb) indicating dates of manufacture between October 4, 2010 and March 13, 2011 (the "Affected Manufacturing Period"), in the following sequential order: L4010, L4110, L4210, L4310, L4410, L4510, L4610, L4710, L4810, L4910, L5010, L5110, L5210, L5310, L0111, L0211, L0311, L0411, L0511, L0611, L0711, L0811, L0911, L1011 and L1111.
Hazard identified
The bulbs can overheat during use, posing a fire hazard.
Lighting Science Group is aware of 3 incidents of product failures in Canada, and 68 incidents of product failures in the United States. The 3 Canadian failures and eight of the U.S. failures were accompanied by visible smoke or fire conditions. The incidents include damage to light sockets, melted fixtures, burned rugs/carpet/ floors, damage to a circuit and to a lamp. There have been no reports of personal injuries.
Health Canada has not received any reports of incidents or injuries to Canadians related to the use of these bulbs.
Number sold
Approximately 37 units of the affected Definity brand bulbs and 88,000 units of the Sylvania brand bulbs were sold at retailers across Canada.
Time period sold
The affected products were primarily sold from January 2011 to January 2012.
Place of origin
Manufactured in China and Satellite Beach, Florida, U.S.A.
