This recall involves packages of pig ears (dog treats).

Euro-Can brand pig ears sold in bulk, item # 12000U N/A 84

Packaged and bulk products were sold in various pet supply and grocery stores.

Hazard identified

The manufacturer, Euro-Can Manufacturing Inc., is recalling lot 84 of dry animal food due to possible contamination with Salmonella. This bulk shipment was also packaged into the above identified lots by the distributor Junglemax.

Pets such as dogs and cats, and their food, can carry Salmonella. Humans can contract salmonella infections by handling pets, their food or their feces.

Salmonellosis symptoms generally include:

  • sudden fever
  • headache
  • abdominal cramps
  • diarrhea
  • vomiting

As of April 25, 2017, the company has not received any reports of illnesses related to the recalled products.

41,040 recalled pig ears have been sold in Canada.

The recalled products were sold from October 2016, to March 2017.

What you should do

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled pig ears.

Consumers who purchased the prepackaged products may return recalled products to their retailer for a replacement product or reimbursement. For more information about the recall of prepackaged products, consumers may contact Junglemax, Inc. at 450 389 1222 (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday [EDT]).

Consumers who purchased pig ears sold in bulk should contact their retailer to determine whether their product is included in the recall.

It is recommended that consumers always wash their hands with soap and running water after feeding, handling or cleaning up after their pets. All surfaces that come into contact with animal food or sick animals should also be cleaned.

Please note that the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) prohibits recalled products from being redistributed, sold or given away in Canada.
